A Note from the General Manager . . .
Looking at the coming year, there are many things to look forward to at Morgan
Run. As expressed by ClubCorp’s President and CEO, Eric Affeldt, over $70
million is being reinvested in the various clubs in the form of capital
improvements. For Morgan Run, this means over $390,000 in approved capital, in
addition to the $6.5 million committed to the Retreat at Morgan Run project.
Over the past couple of years, our capital dollars have been heavily used for
more visible improvements, such as dining room, lobby, and meeting room
additions and renovations. This year, there will be more of a focus on behind
the scenes improvements. For example, $125,000 will be spent on irrigation, as
well as another $40,000 to $50,000 spent on new golf course equipment. While
these capital improvements may not be as outwardly visible, they will have a
tremendous effect on the quality of the greens.
In addition, there will be great focus this year on adding Member value. Company
leadership continues to work hard with the various clubs to add Member value
while driving the price value relationship. We can see this in the recent
rollout of the Hospitality First Training Program, a comprehensive training
program that all dining service staff are currently taking part in. The classes
have a major focus on providing individualized Member service, which you will be
sure to notice during future visits to the Club. In addition, a new and enhanced
Member-friendly website will be introduced in April or May. The new website will
have many useful features such as online rosters and other interactive tools.
Also, there has been an increase in benefits for the Signature Gold programs
with the addition of the Anthem and Seville country clubs, two new ClubCorp
properties in Arizona.
Additionally, you will see increased Member benefits with the continuation of
complimentary golf and tennis lessons, as well as the addition of complimentary
athletics programs, as well as complimentary cooking lessons. We will also have
an increased focus on our “Grab-N-Go” program, a convenient way for you to get
your favorite Rancho Grill menu items to go. We will also have an increased
focus on updating Member data and continuing to provide you with regular club
communications to better connect you with the Club. The addition of Member
Welcoming Committees to welcome New Members will also assist in creating a
well-connected Membership. All of this, coupled with the construction currently
taking place, is sure to make this a great year at Morgan Run.
And speaking of the construction, many of you have probably noticed an increase
in activity around the construction site, as we are certainly making headway in
the project that will soon become the Retreat at Morgan Run. In the construction
industry, the pouring of the foundation is seen as important step. We at Morgan
Run, feel the same way. With the foundation set to be poured later this month,
we have decided to have a celebration to mark this important milestone. On
Friday, February 29th, we will be holding a Foundation Party and Barbecue at the
site of the construction. Please look for more information to come on this fun
event. In addition, be sure to visit www.morganrun.com for current updates on
the construction process, as we will continue to post the latest news on a
regular basis.
With a new year now upon as, we took the opportunity to look at the organization
of the Board of Governors and their interactions with the various committees.
The Executive Committee of the Board has decided to reorganize the Board in a
way the will provide a broader spectrum of representation for the Membership.
The Board will continue to consist of a Board Chair, an Incoming Board Chair,
and an Immediate Past Chair. In addition, we will have the four club committees
represented by the Chairs of the Social, Membership, Golf, and Tennis
Committees. Lastly, five Members at Large will complete the Board. The Board
will look to the various committees to report to their respective Chairs who
will then share the information at the monthly meetings. The Executive Board
believes that this reorganization will create a fuller representation of all
cross sections of Membership, making the Board more effective in representing
and communicating to the General Membership. We look forward to another
successful year with the Board and the various committees, and truly appreciate
each of you who volunteer your time with one or more of these groups.
On a side note, after further evaluation of the last year’s financials, we have
decided to eliminate breakfast service in the Rancho Grill on Friday mornings
beginning mid February. Unfortunately, we lost over $10,000 last year due to the
lack of sales for Friday morning breakfasts. We felt that in order to control
these costs without passing on additional expenses to the Membership, this was a
necessary and decision. As is offered every day, we will continue to have
continental breakfast items and beverages available in the lobby. In addition,
the Snack Bar will continue to offer breakfast items, as well. We appreciate
your understanding, as we are making these decisions in order to provide you
with the best services at the lowest costs possible.
If you have any questions about any of this or other club happenings, please
feel free to call me or stop by. As always, I appreciate and look forward to
your ideas and feedback. Best wishes, and I look forward to seeing you around
the Club.
Respectfully,
Jim MacDonough
